Flat Cay, St Thomas

I had the pleasure of organizing and guiding a dive at Flat Cay off the coast of St. Thomas, USVI, hosted aboard the fantastic Sol Seeker.  The day was a perfect blend of exploration, marine life encounters, and diving camaraderie—a true reminder of why I love this.

Flat Cay has always been a favorite of mine. While the water was still a little murky from the recent seasonal transition, it’s clear that visibility is improving. Even with the haze, the dive delivered some unforgettable moments. The highlight for me? Spotting a couple of Caribbean spiny lobsters hiding in the rocky crevices of the reef.

This trip also gave me the chance to try out the Garmin Dive watch, generously provided by Captain Ron Fish and Scuba. This watch is a game-changer! It made tracking where we were nice and easy.

It was an absolute pleasure running this dive for Sol Seeker and helping our group experience the unique underwater charm of Flat Cay.

If you’re in St. Thomas, Sol Seeker is the perfect boat for your next adventure!

Quick Overview on living in Costa Rica as an Expat.

Costa Rica, a gem in Central America, is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant culture. As a retired military professional turned travel enthusiast, I'm here to share insights on what it’s like for expats like us to live in various parts of this beautiful country. Today, let's dive into the living costs, unique attractions, and essential tips for settling down in Tamarindo, Jaco, and Puerto Viejo, including visa requirements and the infamous visa run.

Living in Costa Rica: Exploring Tamarindo, Jaco, and Puerto Viejo

Tamarindo: The Paradise with all the extras

Living Costs

Tamarindo, located on the Pacific coast in the Guanacaste province, is a bustling beach town popular among expats. The cost of living here can vary, but on average:

  • Rent: A one-bedroom apartment in the town center can range from $600 to $1,200 per month. For those preferring a quieter area, options are available for around $500 to $900.
  • Groceries: Expect to spend around $300 to $500 per month for groceries, depending on your preferences for local versus imported goods.
  • Dining Out: Meals at local sodas (small, family-run restaurants) are affordable, with prices around $5 to $10 per meal. Dining at more upscale restaurants can cost between $15 to $30 per person.
  • Utilities and Internet: Monthly utilities, including electricity, water, and internet, typically amount to $100 to $200.

Diving in Tamarindo

Tamarindo offers some of the best diving experiences in Costa Rica. The nearby Catalina Islands are famous for their abundant marine life, including manta rays, sharks, and vibrant schools of fish. Several dive shops in Tamarindo offer Diving certification courses and guided dives for all skill levels. The warm waters and excellent visibility make it a diver's dream destination.

Jaco: The Surfer's Haven

Living Costs

Jaco, located in the Puntarenas province, is a lively town known for its surf culture and nightlife. Here's a snapshot of the living costs:

  • Rent: A one-bedroom apartment in the town center ranges from $500 to $1,000 per month. Outside the center, prices can be as low as $400.
  • Groceries: Monthly grocery bills typically range from $250 to $450.

Puerto Viejo: The Yoga Retreat

Puerto Viejo, situated on the Caribbean coast in the Limón province, is known for its laid-back vibe and Afro-Caribbean culture. Living costs here are generally lower than in Tamarindo and Jaco:

  • Rent: A one-bedroom apartment in the town center costs between $400 to $800 per month, while more rural areas offer options as low as $300.

Puerto Viejo is a haven for yoga enthusiasts. The town is dotted with yoga studios offering a variety of styles, from Vinyasa to Hatha, and even beachfront sessions. Many expats and visitors come here to rejuvenate their mind and body, making it a perfect place to immerse yourself in wellness and mindfulness practices.

Visa Requirements and Visa Runs

For most nationalities, Costa Rica offers a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival. However, for those planning to stay longer, a visa run is necessary to renew this period. A typical visa run involves:

  1. Leaving Costa Rica: Travel to a neighboring country, such as Nicaragua or Panama. Many expats choose to visit these countries for a short trip.
  2. Staying Out of Costa Rica: Stay outside of Costa Rica for at least 72 hours, though some have reported being able to return sooner.
  3. Re-entering Costa Rica: Upon re-entry, you'll receive a new 90-day tourist visa.

It's essential to check the latest visa regulations and requirements, as they can change. Also, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

Final Thoughts

Living in Costa Rica offers a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility. Whether you're diving in Tamarindo, surfing in Jaco, or practicing yoga in Puerto Viejo, each town has something special to offer. The cost of living is relatively affordable, and with a bit of planning, navigating the visa requirements can be straightforward.

Costa Rica's "Pura Vida" lifestyle is more than just a saying; it's a way of life that embraces simplicity, happiness, and a deep connection with nature.

Embrace the Rain

I've come to appreciate the profound impact of shared experiences, especially amidst the unpredictable elements of nature. Recently, I had the privilege of embarking on a diving expedition in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands with Captian Ron, amidst the rain-soaked atmosphere that only added to the allure of the underwater world.

Diving Through Rainy Days: Forging Connections in the Depths

Embracing the Elements:

With the rain cascading down in a symphony of droplets, we set out for the dive site just south of Lindbergh Bay and west of Water Island. Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, anticipation coursed through our veins as we prepared to explore the mysterious reef and wreck lying beneath the surface. Donning our already water soaked gear, with a sense of camaraderie, knowing that the adventure awaiting us would be worth every rain-soaked moment.

Diving with Friends:

As we descended into the azure depths, a sense of wonder enveloped us, transcending the dreary weather above. Swimming alongside old friends, I couldn't help but marvel at the bond forged through shared experiences beneath the waves. Communication flowed effortlessly through hand signals and shared glances, each dive revealing hidden treasures and fostering a deeper connection with both the ocean and each other.

Exploring the Reef:

The reef, shrouded in mystery and history, beckoned us into its embrace. As we navigated its corals and large swim throughs. Schools of colorful fish darted in and out of the shadows, their vibrant hues juxtaposed against the muted tones of the underwater landscape. Despite the rain above, a sense of serenity enveloped us as we explored every nook and cranny of the reef, each moment etching itself into our collective memory.

A Return to the Surface:

Emerging from the depths, raindrops mingled with the saltwater on our faces, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the beauty of the natural world. As we surfaced, laughter echoed through the misty air, a celebration of our shared adventure and the bonds that had grown stronger with each passing moment. As we started the dinngy we donned our dive masks to protect us from the rain as we rode back to warmer areas.

In Conclusion:

Diving through the rain in St. Thomas, USVI, was more than just an underwater adventure—it was a testament to the power of connection and the resilience of the human spirit. Despite the weather's best efforts to dampen our spirits, we emerged from the depths with hearts full of gratitude and memories that will last a lifetime. So here's to diving with Captain Ron, rain or shine, and the bonds forged through shared experiences beneath the waves had captured my heart, leaving an indelible imprint on my soul.

5 May 2024 Puerto Rico

What the Grackle

I've learned to adapt and embrace the unexpected. So when the opportunity arose to explore San Juan and Luquillo, Puerto Rico, I knew it would be an adventure worth undertaking. Join me on a whirlwind journey through two days in each place, filled with rain-soaked escapades, cultural discoveries, and a dash of culinary indulgence.

The Grackle and the rain is everywhere.

Day 1: Arrival in San Juan

After a brief travel day, we checked into The Pelican Poshtel, a charming haven nestled near the breathtaking beach. Despite the allure of the azure waters, I couldn't resist taking a quick stroll along the sandy shore, letting the soothing rhythm of the waves wash away the weariness of travel.

Day 2: Rainy Resilience in San Juan

Mother Nature had other plans for us on our second day, as rain greeted our explorations. Seeking respite, we paid a visit to Aviva Chiropractic for a much-needed massage, soothing both body and soul. Despite the downpour thwarting our attempts to find parking in Old San Juan, we persevered and savored a delectable dinner at The New Ceviche Peruvian restaurant (Isla Verde), a culinary delight amidst the stormy skies.

Day 3: Forts and Rainy Retreats

With an early start, I kicked off the day with a invigorating workout on the beach, basking in the glory of a sunrise over the horizon. Our journey continued with a tour of the historic forts in Old San Juan, immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Puerto Rico's past. We explored the formidable Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known simply as "El Morro," with its sprawling ramparts and commanding views of the sea. We noticed the common Grackle finding it's way into every part of the city. Then, we delved into the labyrinthine passages of Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the Americas, marveling at its intricate design and strategic significance. As rain threatened to dampen our spirits, we sought refuge in a cozy coffee shop, reminiscing about our adventures while sipping on steaming cups of java. The day concluded with a melodic Jazz concert in Luquillo, a soothing symphony amidst the drizzle.

Day 4: Rainforest Revelations

Venturing into the lush wilderness of the rainforest, we embarked on a challenging hike up the El Yunque and Los Picachos trail to the El Yunque, mountain's summit. Despite the physical exertion, the panoramic vistas from the top were well worth the effort. Note to self: schedule that post-hike massage next time! After the hike we stopped for a quick coffee and came upon our friendly Grackle. The day culminated in a sumptuous meal at Saba, a culinary masterpiece that tantalized the taste buds and replenished our weary bodies.

Day 5: Farewell to Paradise

As our time in Puerto Rico drew to a close, I seized the opportunity for one final morning workout and a leisurely stroll through the vibrant streets. With memories of our adventures firmly etched in my mind, it was time to bid adieu to this enchanting island paradise and journey back to St. Thomas, the US Virgin Islands.

Reflecting on our escapades, I couldn't help but marvel at the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless wonders awaiting those willing to venture beyond their comfort zones. From rain-soaked streets to sun-kissed shores, San Juan and Luquillo had captured my heart, leaving an indelible imprint on my soul.

Exploring Edinburgh: A Journey on Foot

My recent trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, was a delightful blend of family visits, historical exploration, and soaking in the natural beauty of this captivating city. Travelling without a car, I relied on buses, trains, and my own two feet to navigate the city. Here’s a detailed account of my adventure.

The Joy of Short Trips

Day 1: Arrival and Accommodation

I landed in Edinburgh late at night and made my way to St. Christopher's Inn. This hostel was a pleasant surprise; it was immaculately kept and even surpassed my previous experience at their Amsterdam location. After checking in and settling down, I rested for the exciting days ahead.

Day 2: Relaxation and Exploration

The second day was all about unwinding from the journey. I strolled through a nearby mall and then ventured into the lush, serene parks. The beauty of the Scottish landscape was truly refreshing. Later, I walked to my Aunt’s house, where I would stay for the remainder of my trip. The day was spent enjoying the tranquillity and taking in the scenic views. I also visited St Giles' Cathedral and paid my respects at the Great War memorial inside. The cathedral is a beautiful, historic building with stunning stained glass windows and intricate stonework.

Day 3: Museums and Overcast Views

Day three was packed with cultural experiences. I visited the National Museum of Scotland, a treasure trove of history and knowledge. Here are some interesting facts about the museum:

  • The museum houses over 20,000 objects, ranging from Scottish antiquities to artefacts from around the world.
  • It features the famous Lewis Chessmen, a set of 12th-century chess pieces carved from walrus ivory and whales' teeth.

After the museum, I explored the library and then headed to the tallest point in Edinburgh, Arthur’s Seat. The panoramic views from the summit were still stunning, even though the sunset was rather overcast, as is typical for the area. I also met fellow travellers who were equally mesmerised by the picturesque scene.

Day 4: Edinburgh Castle

On the fourth day, I took a long walk through the iconic Edinburgh Castle. This historic fortress dominates the skyline and offers a deep dive into Scotland’s military history. Here are two fascinating facts about the castle:

  • Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, including the Wars of Scottish Independence and the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
  • The castle is home to the Crown Jewels of Scotland and the Stone of Destiny, which have been used in the coronation of Scottish monarchs for centuries.

Day 5: Final Day and Departure

My final day in Edinburgh was a mix of relaxation and reflection. I took a leisurely walk around the city, visiting the Scott Monument, a striking Gothic structure dedicated to the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. I enjoyed a superb cup of coffee at a local café before boarding the bus to the airport.

The airport experience was smooth and efficient, making my departure from Edinburgh much easier than my arrival.

Edinburgh’s charm lies not just in its historical sites and scenic beauty but also in the warmth of its people and the ease of getting around. Whether you're here for a short visit or an extended stay, this city has something to offer everyone. Until next time, Edinburgh!

Egypt Feb 2023

As a United States Army veteran, I've learned to appreciate the beauty of teamwork and the thrill of adventure. So when the opportunity arose to embark on a diving expedition with the Red Sea Diving College in Sharm El Sheikh, I couldn't resist the call of the deep blue sea. Over the course of five days, I had the chance to dive into the wonders of the Red Sea, encountering majestic Napoleon fish and a plethora of other fascinating marine life.

A Dive Odyssey:

The experience began with a promise of exploration and discovery. Ten dives awaited us, each offering a unique glimpse into the vibrant underwater world of the Red Sea. From colorful coral reefs to mysterious shipwrecks, every dive presented its own set of wonders to behold. The dive sites were carefully chosen to cater to both novice divers and seasoned veterans like myself, ensuring that everyone could fully immerse themselves in the adventure.

Hospitality at Sea:

One of the highlights of the trip was the hospitality extended by the Red Sea Diving College team. Onboard the dive boat, we were treated to freshly brewed coffee and traditional Egyptian-style lunches, providing a taste of local flavors amidst the stunning backdrop of the sea. The atmosphere struck a balance between full-service assistance and allowing divers to take charge of their own experience, fostering a sense of camaraderie among fellow adventurers.

Multilingual Mastery:

Communication is key, especially in the realm of diving. I was impressed by the proficiency of the dive instructors and dive masters, who seamlessly navigated conversations in at least three languages. Whether it was English, Arabic, or another tongue, their linguistic prowess ensured that instructions were clear and interactions were effortless, enhancing the overall dive experience.

Navigating the Waters:

While the underwater escapades left me awe-inspired, there were some challenges on the surface. The abundance of regular store owners near the dive center, eager to sell their wares, occasionally disrupted the tranquility of the surroundings. However, it was a minor inconvenience amidst the grandeur of the diving adventures that awaited us.

A Well-Deserved Respite:

After a day of exploring the depths, there was nothing quite like indulging in a rejuvenating massage. And the best part? A one-hour massage cost a mere $4.18, offering a blissful reprieve from the rigors of diving.

In Conclusion:

My journey with the Red Sea Diving College in Sharm El Sheikh was nothing short of extraordinary. From the thrill of encountering magnificent sea creatures to the warmth of Egyptian hospitality, every moment was etched into my memory. Despite the occasional challenges, the overall experience surpassed my expectations, leaving me with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the underwater world.

If you're seeking adventure beneath the waves, I wholeheartedly recommend diving with the Red Sea Diving College. With their expert guidance, multilingual support, and a dash of Egyptian charm, your diving expedition is sure to be an unforgettable adventure.
